A handyman will sometimes just tell you a price to get the job at all costs, even if that means they are not making a fair wage.  It will be easy for them to forget about you when another opportunity pops up.  If a handyman undersells himself, he may quickly move on to a bigger job to adequately make a living. A contractor may not always tell you when they are using the cheapest possible options for your project.   They will likely introduce the least expensive options when trying to ensure they stay within a limited budget.  And the last thing a handyman will want to do is increase your options while they are protecting their wage for the entire job.
